The Greatest Show On Earth by Richard Dawkins

Richard Dawkins, The Greatest Show On Earth

This is one of those books where you get the impression the author was sort of nagged or pressured into producing the work. Dawkins’ other works on biological evolution are less formulaic and you cover vast amounts of ground with a kind and gentle guide. After years of confronting and being confronted by the “Scientific Creation” crowd, it’s amazing that our favorite atheist doesn’t come out swinging when doing a book specifically intended to “prove evolution.”

Instead of the anticipated acerbic rejoinders, we are cordially welcomed as if by an old friend, and invited to sit and think things through. For me, one of the greatest gems came right at the start. Quoting Ernst Mayr, Dawkins demonstrates the influence of the old Platonic Ideals and how their logical contingencies forced human thinking into accepting the idea of fixed species. Removing this obstacle to our thinking, he then goes on to inspire us further with the wonders of creation while documenting with overwhelming evidence the true record of natural history on our planet. I have stepped around this issue of the Platonic Ideals myself without really making the connections in biology that Dawkins does.

My own experience tells me that very few Fundamentalist Creationists would be inclined to read this wonderful book. If, however, you are open to wonder and enjoy the amazing panorama that surrounds us all, this book is for you. Dawkins avoids being “preachy” in the manner that he comes across at times in the “God Delusion.” In “The Greatest Show on Earth” we find the Oxford biologist in his field of expertise and having a great time.

The book is filled with many illustrations and drawings which are helpful in explaining the sometimes complex workings of biology. We also are treated to a large number of full color photographic plates.

The concluding two chapters of the book present us with the theological puzzles. What does the immense suffering observed in the geologic record tell us about the “justice of God?” (Theodicy). And, given both Darwin’s and Dawkins’ presentation that it was specifically “through death and famine… the production of the higher animals directly follows,” why would God use such a means to create man in His own image? I don’t pretend to have the complete answers for such a riddle, but isn’t this pretty much what we see in the Bible’s record as well? Death is in the world. The world is ruled and shaped by death. However, because One overcame death, we have the hope that this current state of affairs will be overturned and that death itself will be destroyed.

I can’t pretend that Dawkins is motivated by this same hope as I am. He explicitly denies it elsewhere. I do, however, appreciate the fact that he is in a discussion about things that are real and things that really did happen (Earth’s Natural History). There is a great contradistinction here between our Oxford atheist and the “Young Earth Creationist” crowd. The YEC’s want me to find my hope in a delusion. Dawkins gives me the truth and then says, in effect, “Good luck with that.”

Thank you, Professor. I appreciate the candor. I am sobered by the reality. And, I do still find more than enough room for that hope.

Our Material Nature

Michelangelo's Creation of Adam
I had composed the following brief paragraphs a while ago as the introduction for a longer essay dealing with the material nature of the human condition.

“Let us first stop at the shrine of Materialism, for we are material beings. Our consciousness arises from the activity of millions of cells, all of them firing off electrical and chemical signals to one another creating this thing we call the Human Mind.

The first aspect of the mind that we note is the Ego. This is self-awareness. The ground where Rousseau stood when he said, “I think, therefore I am.” Jacques was looking for the most basic and elemental thing he could say about himself. It wasn’t how tall he was nor did it have anything to do with his native country. Instead, he posited the idea that even if he should doubt his own existence, this doubt would serve as evidence of a mind at work. Ergo: “I think, therefore I am.”

If we were to alter the chemistry of our brains we could change our moods and even at times, change our opinions. A cup of coffee does this for millions of people every morning. So we must confess that the fact we are thinking at all is the result of material processes and not the result of some sort of spirit intrusion or alien invasion into our realm. As one writer put it, “Man is of the earth, earthy” (1 Corinthians 15:47). We are dust and water mixed into a miry clay.

This is a humbling thought, but it also provides the basis from which we may elevate our own thoughts and even ourselves, for this “dust” and all of the other elements which comprise our being were manufactured in the fires of the stars themselves. We are “dust;” but that dust is actually “star-dust.” It is something from the heavens.

Having settled and coagulated into a somewhat smooth paste it is easy to ignore our fiery beginnings. The evidence is ample and conclusive, however. Our atoms were forged in the fires of a supernova. They then collected themselves and arranged themselves according to a pattern that still mystifies the minds of our greatest scientists. Life began. We began. And, somewhere along the way, we began to think and ask questions.”

I Will Not Lie To David – Part II

V838 Monocerotis exploded over 20,000 years ago.

V838 Monocerotis exploded over 20,000 years ago.

This is a series of photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of a star in the constellation Monoceros (The Unicorn). On January 6, 2002, this particular star was observed to brighten considerably and the Hubble Telescope was turned toward it to investigate what was going on. This particular star is approximately 20,000 light years away. This means that the “explosion” we are seeing actually happened over 20,000 years ago. It took that long for the light to travel from  V838 Monocerotis to us here on Earth.

Light travels at 186,282 miles per second through the vacuum of space. This is one of the physical constants of our universe. Though the speed of light can be slowed down by directing it through different mediums like a crystalline matrix, you cannot “speed up” the speed of light in a vacuum. When Young Earth Creationists (YECs) attempt to confuse their followers concerning the speed of light, they will almost invariably refer to the fact that light can be “slowed down” as I have mentioned, however they will almost always leave out the fact that slowing down the speed of light would actually make the age of the universe much, much older and not younger as they desire. Their tactic is simply to confuse and not to educate. This series of pictures tells us conclusively that the universe is at least 20,000 years old.

Supernova 1997A exploded around 169,000 years ago.

Supernova 1997A exploded around 169,000 years ago.

This next picture is of a supernova that was observed and then photographed by the Hubble back in 1997. This particular shot is actually from a few years after the 1997 observation and shows a ring of stellar material that was ejected by the star and is expanding through space. This star is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a companion galaxy to our Milky Way. It is approximately 169,000 light years from Earth.

What we are seeing in both of these pictures isn’t just “beams of starlight.” We are observing actual events and we can see that these events progress and develop over time. However, we are seeing these events and their complex consequences many, many thousands of years after they occurred. YECs have argued in the past that “God could have created those stars thousands and millions of light years away and AT THE SAME TIME created the ‘beams of light’ seen radiating from the stars.” This is one part of an argument known as “The Appearance of Age.”

But what we are seeing aren’t just “beams of light.” We are seeing complex events. I have had to ask myself, “Just how far would God go in creating an ‘Appearance of Age’ before His own moral character would come into question?” At what point will we have to invoke “deception” as being one of God’s attributes? I’m not at all comfortable with these implications. Did God actually create these phenomena merely 6,000 years ago and did He do it in such a way as to make it appear that the universe is actually around 13.5 billion years old? Why would He deliberately deceive us? For many YECs I have come to the conclusion that their “god” may really be Loki, the Trickster God of the Norse and not the Yahweh of the Bible.

Many have responded with the plea that “God can do anything!” But, this is key… The question is not ‘What Could God Do?” The question is “What Did God Do?”

Did God create our cosmos 6,000 years ago? He could have done it and then made it look billions of years old just to jerk us around. For that matter, He could have created everything about five minutes ago, including my previous posts in this blog, just to make it look as though everything was really older. What kind of a God do we serve?

Supernova in NGC 266 exploded some 215 million years ago.

Supernova in NGC 266 exploded some 215 million years ago.

This is another Hubble photograph. The galaxy you see is NGC 233. It is some 215 million light years away. The arrow in the picture is pointing at a star which was observed to have gone supernova in 2005. This is a record of an event which occurred 215 million years ago.

As we will explore in other posts here, none of this evidence of the universe’s vast age contradicts anything the Bible itself is telling us. It does however, conflict with much of what some people are telling us about the Bible.

In evaluating this evidence and the contradictory claims of Fundamentalists I have found a great deal of confidence and comfort in Psalm 89:35. “God will not lie to David.”

That star really did blow up 215 million years ago. The Creator is not “jerking us around.” Our world is real and we can confidently reach many conclusions about its general age as well as the conditions that we observe.

Here Be Dragons: ICR’s Latest Dino Claims

The Institute for Creation Research takes the position that the earth is only around 6,000 years old. A few of their contributors will allow for an earth that is as much a 10,000 years old – but this organization has always been very much “Young Earth Creationist” in their opinions. In fact, they regularly ridicule anyone who offers the idea that the earth may be “hundreds of thousands,” or “millions” let alone billions of years old. Coupled with their “scientific” view of a young earth, they also are quite the evangelists for a literal interpretation of the Bible’s genealogical lists. Currently, their site is promoting a book entitled “Dragons: Legends & Lore of Dinosaurs.”

Confusing myth with reality is a staple for these folks. One wonders why they don’t promote sphinxes, griffins and mer-people. There is a substantial amount of “evidence” for the existence of these creatures – and often from the same sources as the claims for the existence of dragons.

A recent report detailing the finding of the remains of soft tissue found within the fossilized bones of a mosasaur along with similar finds in Tyrannosaurus rex bones has captured the attention of many who follow paleontology. This does appear to be a credible find and a surprise to almost everyone in that part of the scientific community. As one paleontologist puts it:

“’The reason it hasn’t been discovered before is no right-thinking paleontologist would do what Mary did with her specimens. We don’t go to all this effort to dig this stuff out of the ground to then destroy it in acid,’ says dinosaur paleontologist Thomas Holtz Jr., of the University of Maryland.”

So, the real story here is the celebration of a maverick scientist who has expanded the boundaries of scientific knowledge by careful and rigorously scientific work. Academics and scientists of all disciplines herald these types of breakthroughs and everyone’s store of knowledge is immensely increased by such work.

ICR, however, following their decades old pattern of “quote mining,” has taken snippets from these various reports and attempted to reconstruct their Dragon/Flintstones mythos of humans and dinosaurs living at the same time and even sharing a boat ride together. They fixate upon the results of a carbon dating analysis and upon the now overturned prevailing consensus that soft tissues could not have survived within fossils for “millions” of years. Let’s consider what we have learned here and see how ICR never really seems to learn anything.

First of all, the idea that proteins have persisted within fossilized material is actually a long-standing observation – even predating the Scientific Revolution of the 17th and 18th Centuries. The chitin which comprises the exoskeletons of many invertebrates (bugs) has been observed in a preserved state within amber for centuries. In some cases, these insects date as far back as the Jurassic Period,  which of course provided the basis for Michael Crichton’s best-selling fiction books. As a point of reference, the Jurassic amber fossils come from a time that is almost 80 million years older than the Cretaceous mosasaur under question here.

Next, complex organic compounds have been observed to have persisted within the fragments of carbonaceous chondrite meteors. These meteors date to around 4.5 BILLION years ago – AND! – the organic compounds survived a fiery reentry through the earth’s atmosphere. There has been considerable debate over the significance of these molecules (PAHs) and the role they may have played with life on earth, but they are organic and moreover, they are at least 4.5 billion years old.

This brings us to the recent finding of soft tissues within fossilized dinosaur bones. As we have seen, no one had ever applied the destructive techniques used by Mary Schweitzer and Jennifer Wittmeyer (girls in science?) to dinosaur bones, so it is no wonder that no one had ever discovered what these investigators have found. I have to ask, as surprising as this find initially has been, will it continue to be considered a “surprise” when further researchers and writers look at things from a broader perspective that includes the remarkable preservation of proteins and other organic compounds from far older settings?

Also, ICR has made a great deal out of the results of a carbon dating analysis of these “soft tissues” which has given a result of around 24,600 BP (Before Present). Despite the fact that even this date would invalidate their theories of life on earth, ICR still persists in just throwing information out there hoping to confuse their followers and trusting that everyone will simply be too busy to read the referenced scientific works. What they also deliberately ignore, and what they are hiding from their readers are the complex details behind these numbers.

Soft tissue in fossils are so rare because soft tissues naturally decomposes. But, how do they decompose? They decompose due to the action of other LIVING organisms which either feed on the soft tissues or exist within the same environment. Thus, what the 24,600 carbon dating tests revealed was:

Likewise, the amount of finite carbon was exceedingly small, [b]corresponding to 4.68+-0.1 of modern 14C activity (yielding an age of 24 600 BP), and most likely reflect bacterial activity near the outer surface of the bone.

In other words, when you get down to the microscopic level, you will find that there’s almost always a lot of living organisms (germs) at work. That ICR deliberately obfuscates the information contained in these reports really tells us more about ICR than it tells us about soft tissue micro-fossils.

I Will Not Lie To David – Part I

Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David – Psalm 89:35

David II of ScotlandThis particular verse has a special meaning for me because, you see, I am “David.” Named for King David of the Bible as well as David II of Scotland. The Davids in my family are buried in a path across the Southern U.S., in Ulster and from Galloway to Edinburgh. We Davids are a proud folk and we tend to take things a bit more seriously than most.

In my lifelong search for truth and understanding I have approached the Bible in a number of different ways. Even when reading the pages of this book through the eyes of a skeptic, I still had a respect for its antiquity and for the kernel of historical truth that I suspected lay hidden there. There was also a period of time when I was a rather determined Fundamentalist, though I confess that I didn’t have as much success with the book as I had had as a skeptic. The literal interpretation – particularly of Genesis 1 through Genesis 11, just never seemed to fit in with what my senses and observations of the material world were telling me, let alone what the text of the Bible itself says. By this present time in my life, I believe that I can honestly say that I have applied almost every methodology and philosophy to the Bible. This blog will serve as a journal of my thoughts, ponderings and when I can reach them – my conclusions.

After a career spent wrangling with this book as well as with both its erstwhile partisans and its most cynical detractors, I have found that I can trust the Bible. I trust its testimony – but, as I have learned, you cannot be too presumptuous about inserting your own opinions into the text. You must allow the text to speak to you. Let it tell you its story. Lay aside, even if for a moment, the traditions and religious dogma that attempt to infiltrate their meaning into your head and allow the book itself to speak to you. When you do so, I believe that you will be able to apply Psalm 89:35, to yourself as well; no matter what your given name may be.
